BUILD

What you'll build

Learn role prompting, iterative refinement, chain-of-thought, and adversarial prompting to guide AI through real research tasks. Build methodology recommendations, data collection instruments, step-by-step analyses, and research critiques.

1. Set Up Your Research Environment

Create a Claude account, download a sample dataset, and verify your setup works.

2. Prompt an Expert Recommendation

Use role prompting to get a structured methodology recommendation from an AI research expert.

3. Build a Research Instrument

Apply iterative refinement to draft and improve a survey or interview guide across multiple rounds.

4. Run a Step-by-Step Analysis

Use chain-of-thought prompting to walk AI through a complete data analysis with visible reasoning.

5. Stress-Test Your Research Design

Apply adversarial prompting to critique your methodology and find weaknesses before they matter.

Your portfolio builds as you work.

Every project documents itself as you go. Finish the work, and your proof is ready to share.

Everything you need to know

No coding at all! This project uses Claude, a free AI chatbot. You will type prompts and evaluate responses. If you can write a sentence, you can complete this project.

Yes. While the project demonstrates prompts in Claude, all four techniques (role prompting, iterative refinement, chain-of-thought, and adversarial prompting) work with any AI chatbot including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot.

The project provides two free, publicly available datasets: a quantitative GPA dataset from OpenIntro and qualitative interview transcripts from the University of Sheffield. You can also bring your own data.

These prompt engineering techniques apply to any field. Role prompting, iterative refinement, chain-of-thought, and adversarial prompting improve AI outputs for business analysis, content creation, technical writing, and more.

This project teaches prompting through a real research workflow, not isolated examples. You build a complete methodology recommendation, data instrument, analysis, and critique, so each technique has practical context.

This is a standalone project in the AI/ML pathway.
